Wife of Calhoun Judge Dies at Age 55 in Marlin

PORT LAVACA — Mrs. Howard G. Hartzog, wife of the Calhoun County judge, died in her sleep early Monday in a Marlin hospital. She was 55.
Mrs. Hartzog was hospitalized Oct. 2 following a heart attack. Judge and Mrs. Hartzog were in Marlin, her former home, for their annual health checkup when she was admitted.
Active in civic and community affairs, Mrs. Hartzog was a charter member of Calhoun Civic Theater, the Junior League and Calhoun County Civil Defense Corps, handling the telephone communications during hurricane emergencies. She was a sponsor of the Sunlight Girls Club, an honorary member of the Thespians, member of the staff of the Calhoun County Historical Museum and active in the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, PTA and Calhoun Band Boosters.
The former Miss Anna Paul Allen and Hartzog were married May 4, 1935, in Marlin. They lived in Port Lavaca continuously since, with exception of the time the legislature was in session during the 14 years he served as a state representative for this district.
Native of Marlin, she was born Nov. 11, 1911, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lea Allen. She attended Texas Woman's University in Denton and the University of Texas. She served as secretary to the state representative from Marlin prior to her marriage.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Hartzog home, 509 S. Commerce. The Rev. George Dettman, rector of Grace Episcopal Church, will officiate.
Burial will be in Port Lavaca Cemetery under the direction of Richardson Funeral Home.
Survivors in addition to her husband include a daughter, Martha Ann, and a son, Howard G. Jr., both students at the University of Texas; and a sister, Mrs. Henry Rush of Marlin.
Pallbearers will be Maurice Wood, Walter Payne, Frank Wedig, J. C. Melcher, James Houlihan, Bob Tanner, John Faubion, and Craig Dickey.
Honorary pallbearers will be Morris Roberts, Frank Guittard, Dick Cory, all of Victoria; Harry C. Smith, W. H. Bauer, Wayne Lindsey, W. R. Sanders of Seadrift, Ernest Kabela, Roy Barton, Dr. W. G. Smith, Tom Anderson, Willford Mickle, Ruel McDaniel, Johnnie Rylander, Dick Thayer and Ward McCampbell of Corpus Christi.

PORT LAVACA — Commissioners Court Monday announced that all Calhoun County offices including the library and health department will close at noon Tuesday in respect for Mrs. Howard Hartzog, wife of the Calhoun County judge.
Mrs. Hartzog died early Monday at Marlin and services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hartzog home, with burial in Port Lavaca Cemetery. Commissioners Monday also passed a resolution in memoriam to be presented to the Hartzog family.
