A memorial service will be held at the Mt Whitney Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25 for lifelong Lone Pine resident Don Branson, who died Jan. 20, 2006. Pastor Terry Randolph will officiate. Burial will be at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier.

Don was born Feb. 3, 1909, in Huntington Beach. Robert and Etta Branson, Don's parents were living in Bridgeport at the time, but they had lost a baby due to the cold so Etta went to her parents living in Huntington Beach to have Don. Don's childhood was spent at various places up and down the Owens Valley and in Randsburg where Robert worked for the Yellow Aster Mine. Don's parents separated when he was 9 years old and he lived mostly with his mother, who was cooking at the Jeffrey Ranch below Spark Plug Mine in Mono County.

Don had a sister, Marjorie, who died of Leukemia when she was 15 years old and a brother, Jim, who was killed in World War II while in the Navy. Don went to school at the Diaz Ranch and at Keeler, only getting to about eighth grade. When he was 14, he was in Aberdeen helping Les Banta with his vegetable farm.

Don was quite mechanical. He was able to start a tractor that was parked in a narrow shed for farmer when he was 16. He had the job of driving that tractor for about a year. Don held many jobs in his early years, ranging from centrifuge operator ant the chemical plants to working for Bill Skinner in mining and construction. He learned many of hid building skills from Bill Skinner. He became especially skilled at plumbing and electrical work. He later took the test to become a general contractor and plumbing contractor. He worked at Manzanar Camp as chief plumber during World War II.

Don met Ruby Branson while she was teaching kindergarten in Lone Pine. They were married April 2, 1942 in Reno. After a number of years working as a plumbing contractor with Ernest Lasky, Sr., Don became manager of the Lone Pine Water Company. At the same time he built the Willow Motel, now the LP Budget Inn, from Manzanar buildings. After 16 years as manager of the Water Company, Don and Ernie started Lone Pine Television, which continues to this day.

Don was always interested in the community of Lone Pine. He was an assistant Scoutmaster and built the backstops for the Little League. He was a lifelong member of the Lone Pine Gun Club. He loved hunting and fishing and building things for his children and grandchildren.

Don is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruby Branson; his children, Bruce and daughter-in-law, Dorothy, and Timothy Branson, who live in Lone Pine; grandchildren, Benjamin and his Fiancée, Sharon Balmer, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Matthew and his wife Robin, of Elkhart, Ind., and Elizabeth Branson, who lives in June Lake.
