Veteran Fisherman Dies of Injuries Sustained in Crash Captain John Monka, 78, veteran Two Rivers fisherman, injured in the crash of a truck and automobile Jan. 23 at the junction of Highways 141 and 147 in Cooperstown, died this morning at the Holy Family hospital. It was the second highway fatality in the county this year.Captain Monka, who since the death of his wife 10 years ago had been living with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Willert, of 2022 Lincoln street, Two Rivers, was a passenger in a car driven by John Gagnon of Two Rivers, when it collided with a Northern Transportation company truck, driven by Lloyd Patton of Green Bay. He sustained a skull fracture and suffered from shock. Captain Monka was born in Newton in 1866 and when a boy his parents moved to the town of Two Rivers. He attended the Tannery school and later moved to Two Rivers to become a fisherman on craft operating out of that port. In more recent years he operated his own craft, the last one being the Henry Gust. He retired 14 years ago. He was a member of the Holy Name society. In 1896 he married Miss Mary Allie. She died 10 years ago. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Ernest Toseland of Chicago, Mrs. Martha Hickey and Mrs. Henry Willert, both of Two Rivers; son Jerome, of this city; three brothers, Frank, of Two Rivers, Joseph of this city, Alex, of Michigan; two sisters, Mrs. Peter Gates and Mrs. Julia Gagnon, both of Two Rivers and 13 grandchildren. Funeral services will probably be held Saturday morning at the St. Luke's Catholic church in Two Rivers, with interment in Forest View cemetery(sic). Manitowoc Herald Times, February 8, 1945 P. 1
