He was born near Bergelheuse, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on September 26, 1830, where he grew to manhood. Previous to coming to America in 1852, he served three years as a soldier in the German-Danish War.
Upon arriving in America he settled at New Holstein, Calumet county, Wis., where on January 3, 1857, he was united in marriage with Magdalena Langemak, shortly afterward moving to Kiel where he followed his profession of civil engineer and held the office of town clerk of the town of Schleswig, Manitowoc county, for sixteen consecutive years.
In 1864 he enlisted in the 9th Wisconsin Regiment as a member of Co. D, Infantry, and served until discharged at the close of the war in 1865. In 1881 he came to Thorp where he was actively engaged in civil engineer work for many years. In 1883 his family came here to reside.
His wife died on Nov. 29, 1896. For twenty-four consecutive years he has served the town, and immediately following, the village of Thorp, as treasurer. After a long and busy and useful life he died as he had lived--honored, trusted and loved.
He leaves to mourn seven daughters, Mrs. Jno. Ibeling, of Kiel, Mrs. Helen Greves, of Abbotsford, Mrs. Bertha Laberge, Mrs. Johanna Krupp and Mrs. Minnie Brintnall of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Elsie Krupp, of Vulcan, Mich. Mrs. Christina Steele, and one son, Herman C. Tiedeman, of Thorp.
The funeral will be held from the M.E. church on Sunday, Rev. J.B. Bachman officiating, interment taking place in the village cemetery. Item: Mrs. Jno. Ibeling and son Herman of Kiel, and Mrs. John Greves of Abbotsford, have arrived here to attend the funeral of Chr. Tiedemann, father of the ladies. Mesdames H. Brintnall, C. Krupp and A. Laberge, daughters of the deceased, are also expected to arrive from Seattle.
