Mary "Polly" A. L. Cox, my 2nd great grandaunt, was the daughter of Richard and Sally (King) Cox, born in either Habersham or Gilmer County, Georgia. Her grandfather, Richard Cox, Sr., was a Revolutionary War veteran and had been awarded land in Georgia for his service.

Her father, Richard Jr., was a farmer who moved his family numerous times, from Gilmer County Georgia, to somewhere in Illinois, Poinsett Co., AR, Illinois again, Alabama, and two or three counties in Kansas, where Richard is assumed to have died.

On March 3, 1853, Mary wed William Mounce, son of Willis B. and Rebecca J. Mounce, who was born in Orangeberg, South Carolina on March 24, 1835.

Sometime after the Civil War, William changed his surname (and the surnames of his entire family) from MOUNCE to THOMAS. There are conflicting explanations for this odd occurrence. According to Andrew Johnson, who posted the story on genealogy.com, William Mounce enlisted into the Missouri Militia toward the end of the Civil War. After his discharge, he fled to Illinois and changed his name in order to hide from his old succession enemies.

Another story I found was that he was a carpetbagger after the war, this wasn't a popular undertaking, and he changed his name to avoid enemies he made while discharging those duties.

Mary and William had three sons:

Richard David Mounce/Thomas
James Oliver Mounce/Thomas
Hester Mounce/Thomas

Richard married Eliza Jane Parker and had two children with her, living and dying in Arkansas.

James Oliver died when he was only 14.

Hester married Josephine "Josie" Mary Self, had six children, then abandoned the family and was never seen by them again.

After William Mounce/Thomas died in 1906, Mary was wed to Berry Lambert on October 16, 1910. He died almost 8 years later, in January of 1918, and is buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Amity Township, Clark Co., AR. His first wife is also buried there.

I have the death certificate for Mary, who died AFTER her second husband, Berry. She died May 27, 1935 - therefore the photograph that someone put on this memorial is the photograph of SOMEONE ELSE'S grave, and not hers. She died under the name of MARY LAMBERT. Please note the death certificate that I have uploaded.
