Andrew W. Shealy was one of eight family members who served the Confederate military in the War Between the States. Two men lost their lives and left behind six children. Andrew had enlisted with Co.C, 12th Georgia Infantry in his home county of Macon, Georgia. He was captured at the battle of Gettysburg 2 July 1863 and imprisoned at Point Lookout, Maryland. Prisoner exchanges were suspended permanently in August 1864; still a very young man, he chose the better odds for survival and took the Oath of Allegiance on 15 October 1864. He served out the war as a Yankee soldier. It must have been difficult to return to his family who were otherwise so loyal and committed to the Confederacy. In 1867 he married Grace Elizabeth Morgan and together they raised eight children. By the turn of the century, the family had moved to Brazos, Texas.
