John P. Grace was the son of James J. Grace and Elizabeth Daly Grace. His grandfather, Patrick Grace, came to Charleston around 1833 from Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland. John P. grace attended Charleston schools but dropped put of high school when his father died. After working r a few years, a local Congressman invited Grace to become his secretary in Washington, D.C. While there, Grace studied law at Georgetown University and graduated in 1902. Grace entered politics in 1902 when he unsuccessfully ran for the state senate. Grace finally attained a political office in 1911 when he defeated Tristram T. Hyde for mayor of the City of Charleston. He was elected the city's first Irish Catholic mayor by putting together a coalition of Irish and German voters. Hyde and Grace ran against each other again for mayor again in 1915, and this time Hyde won. Undeterred, Grace ran for mayor again in 1919 and was elected. In addition to law and politics, Grace operated his own newspaper The Charleston
