Rites Tuesday For Hammondsport Man
HAMMONDSPORT - The death of Eber Fisk Gleason aged 78, respected resident of this village and former mayor, occurred Saturday night at 9 o'clock at his home. Mr. Gleason suffered a stroke of apoplexy about two years ago from which he never completely recovered. Death was due to a cerebral hemorrhage.
The body was removed to the Bond Funeral Home where friends are invited to call. A Masonic service will be held at the home tonight followed by services Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. W. Aubrey Arlin, rector of St. James Episcopal Church, will officiate and burial will be made in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Mr. Gleason was born in Thurston March 17, the son of Ezra and Sarah Clark Gleason, pioneer residents of Steuben County. From Thurston the family moved to North Urbana where his parents purchased the Chapman farm. Mr. Gleason resided there for many years, where he followed the vocation of vineyardist and farmer. He retired from this about 23 years ago and came to Hammondsport, where he entered into the wholesale grape business with Charles Coryell. On March 1, 1885 he married Miss Mary Knapp who died about two years ago. Mr. Gleason served two terms as mayor, being forced to relinquish the post the second term because of ill health. A staunch Republican, he held several political offices and served on the village board. Active in Grange work, he served as Master of North Urbana Grange, for many years as treasurer of the organization, and served as state Grange deputy. He was also a member of Urbana Lodge, F. and A. M. Survivors include two sisters: Mrs. H. M. DeGraw and Mrs. Catherine Bailey, both of Hammondsport, and several nieces and nephews.
