Major league baseball player 1881-1890. Pitcher and position player for the Boston Red Caps, Boston Beaneaters, Kansas City Cowboys, Washington Senators, Indianapolis Hoosiers and the Philadelphia Athletics.

cause of death: Consumption

May have actually died as the result of being struck by a batted ball.
According to the below article [1], quoting Al Maul, Whitney was hit by a batted ball around 1888 (Bill Kuehne was said to be the batter). He was never quite the same afterwards and died a few years later.
