A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Elk Ridge, Howard County, September 4, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Frederick, Maryland, November 27 as a private with Co. D, 1st Maryland Potomac Home Brigade Cavalry. He was promoted to corporal February 1, 1863, and honorably discharged at term's end September 8, 1864.

He married Lydia V. Carlisle ca. 1866 and fathered Robert G. (b. 06/??/67), John L. (b. 08/??/68), Stevenson (b. 1869), Howard V. (b. 01/15/72), Elizabeth M. (b. 09/??/75), Hetty J. (b. 11/??/78), George Washington (b. 11/28/83), and Emma (b. 08/??/87). By 1870, he was living with his family in Harrisburg and working in the iron industry.
