The headstone says he was born in 1887, but it should read 1886. Levi was the son of George Washington Balentine and Nancy Octivene Moore. Siblings were: Dizzie Elvara, Bertha Rosella, Roxey Louise, Andrew George Jackson, Ader, Cassie Lucinda, Predith, James Williams "Jeems", Nelson and Mary. (Nelson died at the age of 4 and Mary died at 7 months.)

Levi married Lou Frances Sutterfield 25 April 1909.

Levi's sister, Cassie, was my husband's grandmother. She and her baby died in 1919. They were buried in an unmarked grave, and as the years passed, her children moved away and died. None of her grandchildren knew where she was buried. When I began researching my husband's family, I found two of Levi's daughter, Lovra and Jean.

They told me that their daddy, Levi, had taken care of his sister, Cassie's grave their whole life. When he got too old to care for it any longer, he asked his daughters if they would take care of it for as long as they were able. The two sisters had faithfully cleaned and flowered Cassie and her baby's graves up until my husband and I found them. Now, we help them care for her grave, and we also asked Cassie's other grandchildren to donate enough money to purchase her and the baby a headstone so that their gravesites would never be forgotten.

We feel very honored to have met Levi's daughter and know they are a testament to a life well-lived.

Thank you Levi for loving your sister and my husband's grandmother.
