Kate C. Deaver, 91, died on June 17, 2001, at the Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant, IA, where she had lived for 13 years.

The daughter of Ernest Erwin and Olive Lee (Prime) McConnell, she was born July 15, 1909, in Downing, MO.

She was married on October 20, 1932 at Lancaster, MO to Hugh Saxbury, who died on October 29, 1940.

On June 3, 1954 at Bloomfield, IA, she was married to Harold Woodrow Deaver, who died on March 3, 1973.

A 1927 graduate of the Downing High School, she graduated from the Chillicothe Business College. She worked as a clerk for the A.A.A. Extension office in Lancaster, MO. She then worked as a bookkeeper for the Tri-County Electric Cooperative Association in Lancaster, MO as it was just beginning to bring electricity to this rural area. She was a bookkeeper for the Rural Electric Coop in Trampealeau, WI for several years, also.

Following the death of Mr. Deaver in 1973, Kate moved to Memphis, MO and for a brief time made her home with her brother, Lowell.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Memphis, MO and had worked as church secretary for the First United Methodist Church in LaCrosse, WI.

She was a past 50th year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and had served in several state offices in that organization. She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Memphis Chapter.

She was preceded in death besides her parents and her husband, by four brothers, Ward McConnell, Wesley McConnell, Evan McConnell, and Lowell McConnell; four sisters, Opal McConnell, Muriel Shakleford, Burel Spencer and Mabel Lee.

She is survived by three nieces, Freda Lee Crook of Memphis, MO, Judy Goff of Mt. Pleasant, IA and Patricia Lazar of Phoenix, AZ; two sisters-in-law, Martha J. McConnell of Mt. Pleasant, IA and June McConnell of Phoenix, AZ; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held June 20, 2001 at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, MO. Rev. Carol Blackwell, pastor of the Memphis United Methodist Church officiated. Interment was in the Downing City Cemetery at Downing, MO. Pallbearers were Phil Duley, Darrell Goff, Paul Hale, Bob Shanes, Joe Fulk, and Larry Riney.
