Four young mothers and their toddlers from Downing, Missouri were on their way to a Memphis, Missouri studio to have their children photographed. As they pulled from a side road onto the highway they drove directly into the path of a large truck. Two mothers and three toddlers were killed instantly; the other two mothers died the next day.
Ironically, the sole surviving toddler, Kent Poe, was killed in a car crash at the age of seventeen.
The deceased were Mary Frances Spray and Kristin Dawn, Gwendolyn Broomhall and Jason, Judy K Nussbaum and Lisa, and Rita Poe. Kent Poe survived.

Rita Marie (Triplett) Poe, only daughter of George Charles Triplett, Jr. and Gloria Jean Sila, was born in Ottawa, Illinois, May 1, 1956 and passed away September 20, 1975 at the K.O. Hospital at the age of 17 years, four months and 19 days.
She was united in marriage to W. O. Poe September 1974 at the Coffey Church.
She is survived by her husband, a son, Kent, her parents, grandparents, a great grandmother, Edna Mae Kent, uncles and aunts, cousins and host of friends.
Rita accepted Christ as her Savior in Rockford, Illinois at the age of 12, and was a member of the Freedom Baptist Church.
Funeral services were conducted by D.W. Payne & Sons from the Downing Baptist Church, Monday, September 22, 1975 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Kenneth Campbell officiating. Music was provided by Kenneth Campbell, accompanied by Donna Byrn at the piano. Burial was in the Downing Cemetery.
Pallbears were James Oliver, Raymond Kinnamon, George Craig McDonald, Terry Woodruff, Douglas Poe and Dennis Humphrey.
