Jesse was known to have prize horses. A family story has often been told that at one time Jesse made a horse trade with Jesse James and his band of men as they rode through Schuyler County.

Jesse Van Buren Riley, son of James B. and Mary Z. (Carney) Riley, was born on a farm in East Linn Gove community in Schuyler County, Mo., on March 14, 1873 and died in the Grim Smith Hospital in Kirksville on May 11, 1965. He had been hospitalized five weeks following a stroke.

He received his education in the East Linn Grove rural school. He became a member of the Downing Methodist Church during an evangelistic meeting held by the Rev Book in about the year 1907.

He and his father farmed together until the fall of 1903 when he purchased the first of the several small tracts of land which comprise the farm home southwest of Downing which he owned at the time of his death. He was a stock farmer and was especially interested in horses and registered Shropshire sheep.

On November 26, 1903 he was united in marriage to Grace Reed. To them four children were born: Etta M., Iva l., J Reed and Leo E.

He was the fifth child in a family of ten children.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Etta M, who died July 7, 1935; by a grandson, William Riley Eager, by his parents, four sisters: Etta Collins, Emma Collins, Abbie Stice and Evelyn Reedy . Also by three brothers, William F., John T., and James L Riley.

He is survived by his wife, the daughter, Iva and her husband, Arden W. Eager of Memphis, by his two sons and their wives, Reed and Helen, and Leo and Jenivee of Downing, eight grandchildren, Billy J. Riley of Downing, Barbara and her husband Geroge Middleton of Springfeld, Mo., Betty and her husband, Perley Smith of Queen City, Mo., Brenda and her husband James Brush of Marquette Heights, Ill., Bob Riley of Downing, Lynda and her husband Thomas Spivey of St. Louis, John Eager of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and James Eager of Memphis. Five great grandchildren, Annette, Allison, and Wayne Middleton and Kim and Cara Brush. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Carrie Carter of Glenwood, and a brother, Charles L. Riley of Chicago, Ill, and a number of nieces and nephews.

During all of his 92 years he lived among the people in the community loved by many, and respected by all, who knew him. His philosophy of life was much the same as that of Sam Walter Foss as expressed in his poem, "The House of the Side of the Road."

Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 14, 1965 at 2:00 p.m. at the Downing Methodist Church by Rev. Frederick Lawson. Soloist was Rev. Lawson accompanied by Leota Moore on the organ. Body bearers were Billy J, and Bob Riley, John and James Eager, Thomas Spivey, George Middleton and James Brush.
Burial was in the Downing Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Moore Funeral Home.
