WOUNDED FIVE TIMES, LIVES TO RIPE OLD AGE
Martin Kohn, 88, Civil War Veteran Dies At Home of Daughter Here
Martin Kohn, 88, veteran of the Civil War and a native of Centerville, being one of the builders of the Centerville pier, died this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Lang, 1911 Western Ave. with whom he has made his home for the past four years. He has been in failing health for the past five weeks. Burial will take place Monday morning at 9 o'clock, from the St. Paul's Catholic church, and interment will be at Sheboygan, where the deceased resided for many years before locating here. The deceased was born in Germany in 1840 and came to the United States at the age of 20, and after short stays in New York, and Detroit came to Sheboygan. He then proceeded to Centerville to work on the pier being built at that time. The Civil War broke out and Mr. Kohn enlisted and joined Company H, 26th Wisconsin infantry, in 1862.
Wounded Five Times
Mr. Kohn received his baptism of fire at Chancellorsville, Va., May 6, 1863 and participated in the battle of Gettysburg, one of the historical struggles of the war. He took part also in the battle of Lookout Mountain and was with Sherman in the march to the sea. He was seriously wounded in May, 1864, receiving five bullets at one time. This ended his service in the army and nearly cost him his life. After many months in the hospital he was released and sent home to Centerville. He continued his occupation as a carpenter there until he retired from active work. He was a member of the Walter Post, G.A.R. here and later the Sheboygan post. Four children, Mrs. John Lang of this city, Mrs. Robert Gumz, Milwaukee, Mrs. John Bartzen, Butte, Mont., and Jacob Kohn, Milwaukee, as well as twenty grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren survive. A brother, Edward Kohn, Centerville, also survives.
