With great sorrow we mourn the death of a true gentleman. Allen Edward Gummow, 83, Rockton, Illinois, died at 11:55 a.m., Thursday, January 7, 2010 at Sun Valley North, Beloit, Wisconsin.
Born December 7, 1926 in Beloit, Wisconsin, the son of Edward and Daisy (Hall) Gummow. He was welcomed home to the farm house in which he has resided for the past 50 years in Rockton, Illinois. The Gummow farm was purchased by his grandfather over 100 years ago. The farm was recently awarded status as a Illinois Centennial Farm. Allen's roots are deep in the community. His father, Edward was born on the Gummow farm and Allen and Naomi raised their four children there. As a child he arose early to perform chores and returned to those chores after returning from school. He learned very early in life the benefits of hard work and the resulting personal satisfaction. Allen graduated from Hononegah High School, Class of 1944. He interrupted his life on the farm and enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1947. He married Naomi Martin at the North Shore Baptist Church, Chicago, Illinois. Upon his return from the service, he worked with his father in the operation of the Gummow Farms Dairy, which was founded by his father in 1933. Allen took over the operation of the dairy in 1969 and became its President. Allen attended various educational seminars to further his knowledge in the dairy industry. Under his management the dairy expanded its delivery area east to Chicago, south to Champaign, north to Madison and west to Iowa. Allen was also a founding partner and President of Country Stores, Inc., a chain of convenient stores located in the state-line area until his retirement in 1992. Allen was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Durand Masonic Lodge AF & AM #302 and a member of the First Baptist Church, Beloit, Wisconsin. He gave back to the community in various ways including delivering meals for Meals on Wheels for many years. One of his greatest characteristics was his caring for other people. Allen was an avid reader, having a particular interest in dairy publications and any books or articles related to history and the various wars in which America participated. He was especially interested in history related to WWII, perhaps because of having lived through it. He was a genealogist and conducted extensive research tracing his family history several generations. Allen was a husband to Naomi, dear father to Stephen, Kevin, David and Susan.
Survivors include wife Naomi Gummow; sons Stephen and Kevin (Sara) and daughter Susan; granddaughter Katie; grandson David; brothers Robert (Virginia) and Fred (Donna) and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Daisy and son David.
Funeral ceremonies will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 12, 2010 in First Baptist Church, 617 Public Ave, Beloit, Wisconsin with the Reverend Gene Van Galder, pastor, officiating. Burial in Rockton Township Cemetery, 600 West Street, Rockton, Illinois. Visitation will be held at McCorkle Funeral Home 767 N Blackhawk Blvd, Rockton, Illinois from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, January 11, with a Masonic service to be held at 6:45 p.m.
