Perry R. Bennett, Sheriff, Dies

Cooperstown – Perry R. Bennett, 67, Otsego County sheriff, died unexpectedly today in the Mary Imogene Bassett Memorial Hospital.
Hospital authorities said that he died in his sleep, of coronary thrombosis, after having appeared to be recovering from a 12-day illness.
Mr. Bennett had served 11 months of a three-year term in the office of sheriff.

WEST LAURENS NATIVE

He was born in West Laurens, a son of James Morrell Bennett and the late Jennie Chase Bennett. On Feb. 3, 1893, he married Nellie Hoag of Binghamton.
Educated in Milford, he lived most of his life there, where he conducted an insurance business.
Mr. Bennett was a lifelong Republican and served on the party's county committee for more than 20 years.
He was county farm labor administrator during the last war and during the Harding and Coolidge administration was the Milford postmaster.

SERVED IN OTHER OFFICES

He was a trustee of the village and served several years as a justice of the peace. For the six years preceding his election to sheriff's office, he was an undersheriff. He was a member of the Milford Methodist Church, Milford Lodge, 100F; Oneotna Lodge, BPO Elks, and the State Sheriff's Association.
Surviving besides his wife and his father, now in his 93rd year, are a son, martin J. Bennett, Oneonta; A brother, Fred M. Bennett, Amsterdam, and a sister, Mrs. Estella B Brazeau, Hollywood Calif.
The funeral will be in Milford, with burial there. The Rev. C. Wilbur Dodge of the Milford Methodist Church, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. C. Frederic Fraser of the Milford Presbyterian Church.



Perry R. Bennett, Otsego county sheriff since the beginning of the year, died in his sleep at 3:15 this Tuesday morning in the Mary Imogene Bassett hospital where he had been under medical treatment the last fourteen days. His unexpected passing was attributed to coronary thrombosis. When visited by members of his family Monday evening he appeared in good spirits, and his condition was in all respects satisfactory.
Born in West Laurens December 23, 1874, he was the son of James Morrell Bennett, and the late Jennie (Chase) Bennett. He was married February 3, 1898, to Miss Nellie Hoag, formerly of Binghamton, who survives, with his father, now in his 93rd year' an only son, Martin J. Bennett, 11 Reynolds avenue, Oneonta; one brother Fred M. Bennett, proprietor of The Tower Inn, Amsterdam; and a sister, Mrs. Estella B. Brazeau, Hollywood, Calif. There also remain nieces and nephews.
Mr. Bennett conducted the Prospect Hill dairy farm near Milford from 1898 to 1917. He purchased the insurance business founded by his late uncle, William Chase, in 1920, and continued it until his death. He spent forty years of his life in milford, was educated in the Milford schools. For 12 years during the administration of Presidents Warran G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge, he also acted as the Milford postmaster. During World War 1 he was he County Farm Labor administrator.
A life-long Republican, and a member of the County Republican committee for more than 20 years, he was elected in November, 1941, to the officeof Sheriff, and had served eleven months of his three year term at his death. He had previously served six years as undersheriff under the administration of Sheriff Fred F. Fox.
Always interested in the civic affairs of his home community, he had been a trustee of the village of Milford, and also a Justice of the Peace.
He was a life-long member of the Milford Methodist Church a member of the State Sheriffs' association; also of the Milford Lodge of Odd Fellow, and the Oneonta Lodge of Elks.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon in the Methodsit church at Milford. The Rev. Wilbur C. Dodge, Milford Methodist pastor, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. C. Frederick Fraser, pastor of the Milford Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in the Bennett family plot in Milford cemetery. Friends may ball at the Brown & Tillapaugh Funeral home in Cooperstown, Wednesday afternoon and evening.
