Melvin L Abernathy, 73, of 2075 8th Avenue, Marion, died Saturday in Mercy Hospital following a long illness. He was born January 26, 1914, in Vinton and married Edith G. Cue June 15, 1931, in Vinton. She died in 1973. He married Neva Staton June 15, 1974, in Marion. Mr. Abernathy was a welder for 20 years before he retired from FMC. He was past president of Cedar Valley Rock and Mineral Club, and owned and operated Abernathy Rock Shop for over 20 years. Surviving are his wife, Neva; two sons, Corwin of Marion and Aaron of Atlanta, Ga; four stepsons, Claude Andrews of Marion, Ronny Andrews of Hiawatha, Danny Andrews of Kahoka, Missouri, and Kevin Andrews of Center Point; a daughter, Beverly Daws of Hiawatha; six stepdaughters, Betty Erger, Ginger Andrews and Sandra Ashlock, all of Center Point, Elaine Sadoris of Amana, Penny Krob of Walker and Gladyce Andrews of Marion; four brothers, Alfred of Congress, Arizona, Robert of Center Point, Ross of Vinton and Dallas of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren, 21 stepgrandchildren and 12 grat-grandchildren. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, by the Rev. Glenn Hunt of Eden United Church of Christ. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeal Home from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and at the chapel after 10 a.m. Wednesday.
