Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He was graduated first in class from South Carolina College and at the start of the Civil war, he helped organize the Hampton Legion. He took part in the First Battle of Bull, Battle of Gaines' Mill and Antietam. Leading troops at the Battles of Chickamauga and Knoxville, he was wounded in June of 1863. Upon his recovery, he was promoted Brigadier General in February, 1865, and led the last Confederate cavalry charge of the war at the Battle of Bentonville, North Carolina. After the war, he managed the Southern Railway and sponsored investments on Wall Street, New York.
