On the 15th August Bf110s, escorted By Bf109s of the German Luftwaffe attacked Croydon Airport. Samuel was killed in the raid. He was just 18 years old.

He was buried in St Luke's Churchyard at Whyteleafe on the 24th August 1940.

Samuel's name is entered in the UK, WW1 & WW2 Memorial Books 1914-1945 and the Croydon Roll of Honour.
