Lieutenant Thomas Aston was one of the original volunteers flying with Claire Chennault's famous outfit, the "Flying Tigers."
He served with the 26th Fighter Squadron, 51st Fighter Group, United States Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was a son of James G. and Mary E. Aston.
He was killed in action fighting the Japanese while flying a P-40 Warhawk over Kunming, China.
He was originally from Beadling, Pennsylvania.
He was interred in the Gettysburg National Cemetery on November 4, 1947.
BURY 4 VETS HERE TUESDAY; 16 NEXT WEEK
Four veterans who lost their lives while fighting the Japs in the Pacific theatres will be buried in the Gettysburg National Cemetery Tuesday morning and afternoon. The burials will take place at 9, 11, 1:30, and 3 o'clock. Three of the veterans are from Pennsylvania and New York State, Alvin Baker, cemetery superintendent, said today.
Rev. Fr. Mark E. Stock, pastor of St. Francis Xavier's Catholic Church, and a chaplain in the first World War, will furnish priests for two of the three Catholic burials. Relatives of the third veteran said they will bring a priest from the soldier's parish. The fourth burial will be in charge of a local minister, to be selected by the superintendent.
MILITARY HONORS
There will be graveside services with full military honors for each burial. A firing squad of eight men and a bugler from Carlisle Barracks will fire a salute and sound taps for each veteran.
Lt. Thomas H. Aston, Army Air Forces, Houston, Pa., will be buried at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning.
Pfc Edward J. Byrns, Army Ground Forces, Buffalo, N.Y., will be buried at 11 o'clock.
Sgt. Walter F. Casselberry, Army Air Forces, Williamsburg, Pa., will be buried at 1:30 o'clock.
Pvt. Richard C. Corley, Army Air Forces, Scottsdale, Pa., will be buried at 3 p.m.
Twelve other burials are scheduled at the National Cemetery next week, four each on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Tuesday's burials will be in charge of Deatrick Brothers, local morticians, contract funeral directors.
