MAQUON - Lena Cecil Gooding, 92, formerly of Maquon, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, in the Knox County Nursing Home.
She was born March 17, 1917, in Ward County, N.D., the daughter of Russell and Clara Smith Cecil (originally of Maquon Township). Her family returned to Knox County in 1926, where she attended rural McGirr School and graduated from Maquon High School.
She married G.E. 'Pete' Gooding on May 14, 1938, in Galesburg. He died July 17, 1997. The Goodings were proprietors of Gooding's Grocery in Maquon. They removed to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, from 1955 to 1982, where Lena worked as dental assistant for Dr. Robert Lofgren DDS and, after retirement, they returned to their family home in Maquon.
Surviving are two daughters, Sue Kamal, Greeley, Colo., and Gwen Glasbergen, Allison Park, Pa.; and a son, John Gooding, Pasadena, Calif.; with four granddaughters, Shahira Kamal, Nicole Glasbergen (Jeff Bailey), Beth (Devon) Patillo and Claire (Karim) Baki and one stepgranddaughter, Lori Glasbergen (Jack Styne). She also is survived by two sisters, Lila and Beverly Cecil, and two brothers, Jay (Joyce) Cecil and Robert Cecil, all of Knoxville; two sisters-in-law, Margaret (Ken) Cecil and Phyllis (Burton) Cecil of Maquon; one brother-in-law, Tom (Joyce) Gooding of Hillsboro; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.
She was of Methodist faith and served a short time as organist for Maquon Methodist Church. She was a longtime member of Maquon Good Cheer Club and also served on the Maquon District Public Library Board.
Her great-great-grandfather James Smith and great-grandparents, VanRansselaer and Angeline Catlin Smith were among the area's earliest settlers, traveling via covered wagon caravan from Pennsylvania in 1834-35 and settling in Maquon Township, with the Smith/Cecil farm in continuous ownership of Smith descendents to present day.
She was a descendent of Mayflower Pilgrims (Elder) William and Mary Brewster and belonged to PA Western Colony of The General Society of Mayflower Descendents. Several ancestors served in the Revolutionary War and she belonged to North Pittsburgh's Kushkushkee Trail Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at Maquon United Methodist Church, with visitation at 1 p.m. and Rev. Dan Doty officiating. Burial will be in Maquon Cemetery.
