William E. "Will" Wallace was born in Iredell County, North Carolina. He was the son of William E. Wallace, Sr. and Levina (maiden name possibly Knox) Wallace. He never married. He had 3 siblings Ella (Ellen); Matilda M.; and my grandfather, James W. Wallace. After the death of his mother, his father remarried in 1885, He then had 2 more sisters, Cora Lee, Lucy Jane; and 3 brothers, R. Henry, Frank Garfield, and Sidney Harrison Wallace.

1870
IN THE 1870 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 15 of 22, lines 11-17, we find William Sr., age 40, Levina, age 37, 2 sisters, Ella M. (Ellen), age 10 and Matilda M., age 5; 1 brother, my grandfather, James W. Wallace, age 1. Their name is spelled Wallice in this Census. This is the only time we find this whole family together. They are living in the Turnersburg Township, Iredell, NC. The Post Office is County Line, NC. Dad, William was a farmer, Real Estate Value, $230.00. William's widowed mother Keziah Knustep Wallace was still living with them.

(IN THE 1860 US FEDERAL CENSUS, Grandmother Keziah, was living with William Sr., Levina and baby Ella (Ellen), son William was not born yet. At this time Will's family lived at North Of Hunting Creek, Iredell, NC. We will not find Will's mother Levina or Grandmother Keziah listed in the 1880 Census.)

1880
In THE 1880 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 2 of 40, line 49, we find 16 year old Will, and his father, line 50, are living and working at Pilot, Surry County, NC. Dad, William is working at a Saw Mill and son, Will is a LABORER on a Farm at Pilot, Surry County, NC. Their last name is spelled Wallis in this Census. It list William Sr. as married. They were renters. We do not know where his wife, Will's mother, Levina was. I think she may have been sick, maybe staying with another family member?? This family must have been "seeing it hard", at this time, they are living and working in 4 different places.

IN THE 1880 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 11 of 28, line 46, we find Will's brother James, age 10, living in the Bryne Township No. 4, Surry County, NC. He is living with David Stokes, age 19, David's two sisters, and a nephew and his mother, Louisa M. Stokes, age 58. James is listed as a Servant, as a Farm Laborer, Also, his sister Matilda, age 12, was living with another neighboring Stokes Family, Lou M. Stokes, age 33, and her 2 young children. Matilda is listed as a Servant. These Stokes families could be their father's sister Mary Matilda Wallace Stokes husband's family. She was married to Henry Stokes.

IN THE 1880 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 7 of 11, line 11, we find Will's older sister Ella, age 20. She is living and working in Cherry Lane, Alleghany County, NC. She is a servant in the home of 63 year old Aaron Woodruff and his 54 year old wife, Pheriba Woodruff. This family must have been going thru hard times for the family to be separated in so many different directions. Will's mother, Levina must have died between 1880 to 1884. I think she may have died giving birth to his brother R. Henry Wallace in 1883 or shortly after.

1885
In 1885, William, Sr., age 50, marries 20 year old Sarah Ann Clersy Tucker. They have 5 children, R. Henry, Cora Lee, Frank Garfield, Lucy Jane and Sidney Harrison Wallace.

1890
HISTORY skips over 1890 due to a tragic fire in Washington, D.C. that destroyed most of THE US FEDERAL CENSUSUS. I am not sure if Will or his siblings. James W., Ella M., and Matilda M. Wallace returned home after being split up in various home and locations according THE 1880 US FEDERAL CENSUSES.

1900
The next place we find William is in THE 1900 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 38 of 49, line 55, line 53 is his brother, James W., line 54 was a Boarder. They was living and working in Elkhorn Magisterial District, McDowell County, WV. It is interesting that he and his brother "moves" their birth year back "6 years". The Census says William, age 28, James, age 24. According to the 1970 Census, James was age 1, and William was age 7. So, their ages should be William, age 36, and James, age 30. Their occupations says Laborers. Almost all the men in this location were working in or for the Coal Mines.

1908
Will's brother James W. Wallace marries Nancy Elizabeth Dolinger in Welch, McDowell County, WV.

1910
We find Will living at the home of his brother James, and James' wife Elizabeth and their 2 year old son, Delmer. They are still living in Kyle, McDowell County, WV. They are renting their home. Both men were Coal Miners.

1918 or 1919
Will's father, William E. Wallace, Sr. and Will's brother, James W. Wallace (my grandfather) both die in 1918 or 1919. I was unable to find the exact date or place of their death, nor where either was buried. Also, we have not found the death and burial place for Will's mother Levina.

1924
The next place we find Will is on his Certificate of Death, he died in Franklin County, NC. The attending Doctor had seen him from Oct 1, 1923 to May 2, 1924. This was 2 days before his death. His Death Certificate tell us that he died from Bright's disease, Arteriosclerosis and Dilataation of Heart. The disease he had when he died, was contracted at Kyle, McDowell County, WV., 2 years before death. He apparently was still living in West Virginia in 1922. Here in Franklin County, he may have been living with his brother Frank Garfield Wallace, Frank and his family had moved from Pocket, Lee County, NC to Fernon Road, Rocky Mount, Franklin County, VA. The informant on his death certificate is F. G. Wallace. Burial is at THE STORY CREEK CEMETERY, Waidsboro, Franklin County, VA.

One interesting good deed Will did for his brother James W.'s children. He left each $1,000 dollars. They were not to receive it until they turned 21. Will never married. "That may be the reason he had extra money."

Another story was when two of Will's younger brothers, Frank and Sid Wallace, came to see us at Fireco, Raleigh County, WV in 1955. After visiting a little while, they wanted my dad, James Wesley Wallace, to take them to a cemetery around Northfork, McDowell County, WV. Will had told them that he had money buried their and where find it. (I think the cemetery was probably were my grandfather was buried.) SURPRISE!! SURPRISE !! NO CEMETERY---NO MONEY!!

This is all the information that I have about William. I appreciate if anyone knows anything more about Will, his parents or siblings, please let me know.
