Born thrid of six children of Hiram Lawrence & Esther Jane Lake. Mabel was a dressmaker who never married and lived along with her sister Amy, with their parents, long time residents of their home at 3031 West Susquehanna Street, Philadelphia.
Mabel and Amy had taken a vacation to Niagra Falls and the Thousand Islands in August of 1911, and were returning home aboard the Lehigh Valley Railroad. The train wrecked in Manchester, NY on the trestle over the Canandaigua Creek. The train, which was bound from Buffalo, NY to Jersey City, NJ lost three of the fourteen cars, when a piped rail broke while it was going over the trestle. Twenty nine people died, including Mabel and 62 were injured, including Mabel's sister Amy, who was in critical condition in Hahnemann Hospital, Rochester, NY. Mabel's body was returned to Phila. by her Lake cousin, Theophilus(misspelled: "Theodore") Harris, (gardener) of 2413 N Hollywood St., Phila, according to the Evening Bulletin newspaper account. His name is listed as "Theophilus Harris" on Mabel's Death Certificate's transportation portion.
