Catherine Pearce Baxter was the third child of Col. William Willis Pearce and Sarah Jacobus, originally from Sussex NJ, then Ontario/Yates, NY, original landowners in the se quarter of Section 34 west of St. Omer, Adams Twp., Decatur Co., IN, entering land in about October 1820.

She was one of three of the eight or nine siblings in the family who survived into maturity. Her parents and five, possibly six, siblings are interred at the Arnold Cemetery (containing unmarked graves and fieldstones as gravestones perhaps dating prior to the gravestone erected for her sister Martha who expired in 1834). Catherine's brother, William Mitchell Pearce, is buried at the Vanpelt Cemetery in Shelby County; and her remaining sister, Amanda Jane Pearce Dowden, rests at the Vieley Cemetery in Lizton, Hendricks Co., IN.

Catherine married John Baxter about 1849. John and Catherine Baxter resided in Noble Twp., Shelby Co., IN. Catherine expired from consumption. Their children were youths when she died. They were James Baxter (b. abt 1852 who evidently was single, and was buried at Paul Hill Cemetery), Sarah E. Baxter (1853/54 - ?), who married William Mings and resided in Liberty Twp., Shelby Co.; William Willis Baxter (July 1855 - 14 Feb. 1929, Vermilion Co., IL); and Mary Baxter Foreman (1859/60 to about 1879, Decatur Co., IN). Mary was thrown from a horse and killed while departing her grandfather Pearce's farm. No further details of this family or what happened to John Baxter have been learned.
