The son of Oliver Freeman, John was a lifelong resident of York, Maine, where he spent many years working as a mariner.

During the Civil War, he served as a corporal in Co D, 27th Maine Infantry (10 Sept 1862 - 17 July 1863).

His wife was Mary A Ramsdell (1852-1914), who was buried elsewhere in York in a private family plot.

They had six children, though only four names are seen in census records:
Everett P, Nellie A, Ralph R, and George W.
