Curtis Hall was born in 1801; and his wife, Mary (Johnson) Hall was born in 1800, both were natives of North Carolina. They married in their native state, and soon after, moved to Henry Co., IN and settled in Spiceland Twp. where they entered 40 acres of land from the Government, and he continued to add acreage to his farm until eventually owning 120 acres. They had a family of ten children.
Their youngest son, Jesse N. Hall, was born November 26, 1836 in Spiceland Twp., Henry Co., IN. He received a good education, and when about twenty years of age, he began teaching school which he continued doing until 1883. He also worked at the carpenter's trade, during the summer, for a number of years. In 1880, he was elected Justice of the Peace of Spiceland Twp., but resigned at the end of his third year and moved to New Castle, Henry Co., IN. Then in the spring of 1884, he was elected to the same office in Henry Twp. He was also appointed Deputy Assessor of Henry Twp., in April of 1884. Jesse married Rachel P. Harter, the daughter of William Harter, on May 4, 1861, and had a family of three children. He was a chosen member of the Dunreith Lodge, I.O.O.F., and a member of the Grand Lodge.
