Son of Frederick J W Nicholls (1861-1892) and Elinore Augusta "Nelly" Webb Kerr (1870-1918)

Les's father died when he was very young in Hurley, Wisconsin. His mother moved him and his older brother Fred Russell to Great Falls, Montana where she later married Alex Kerr an old time cattleman who lived in the Cascade-Square Butte area.

Les grew up on this cattle ranch and worked on other ranches along the Missouri.

After he married Mary Amanda Buxton in 1910, they homesteaded near Ulm and later moved to Ulm.

The area where he and Mary homesteaded was a dry, dust bowl. He built a main canal with lateral ditches to carry water to irrigate 27 acres. Water was provided by a 4" pump placed in the river and driven by an old Fordson traction fueled with distillate. His efforts not only helped provide produce for his family but provided enough to sell to restaurants in Great Falls as well as to individuals. Mary, who loved flowers, took advantage of the water supply to build a large flower garden.

Les operated the Equity Co-op Elevator in Ulm, Montana from 1942 to 1953. He also worked as a bookkeeper for the Farmers Union Grain Terminal Feed division in Great Falls, Montana.
