Olive was the oldest daughter of Joseph N. & Mary Ellen (Dresel) Wyland. She graduated from Indiana Normal School (now IU-Pa). While visiting her older brother Raymond in Anawalt, WV, she met accountant Otto Caldwell. They married in Barnesboro, Pa. on Aug. 11, 1926 and had son William in 1927.

They moved to Bluefield, Beckley, and Charleston, WV, and lastly to Roanoke, Va. in 1948. She taught school at each place, until retiring in 1980 at Our Lady of Nazareth School. In Roanoke, she was a member and former President of the Women's Club, the Thursday Morning Music Club, the Round Hill Garden Club, and the National Association of Parliamentarians, and a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church.
