JOHN ARLEY BROCK

Aug. 13, 1947 - Dec. 23, 2009

John Brock of Cedar Creek, 62, went home to be with our Lord on Dec. 23, 2009 in Hospice Austin's Christopher House while his loving wife, Linda, held him in her arms.

He was born Aug. 13, 1947 to Donald and Thelma Dunagan Brock in Olney, Texas; delivered by the same doctor who delivered his Mom. John graduated from Gainesville High School in 1965; his first job was as a lifeguard. John joined the Army on February 14, 1966 and was stationed in Germany and France. After leaving the Army on Feb. 13, 1969, he moved to Denton and worked for Brown Express while attending college part time at North Texas State University (NTSU). John graduated from NTSU in 1978 with a degree in education and industrial arts. After graduation, he moved to the Dallas area and continued working for Brown Express and was in the Teamsters Union for 20 years until he suffered a major back injury in 1988.

Due to the injury, John had to change the direction of his life so he moved to Snyder . While living in Snyder, he attended the Texas State Technical Institute (TSTI) in Sweetwater and graduated in 1991 at #1 in his class with an Associate's Degree in Computer Science, thus beginning a new career. After graduating from TSTI, John made his move to Austin and began work on May 15, 1991 for the Texas Department of Human Services (DHS), (now the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, HHSC) as a programmer apprentice. This was his true calling which he loved more than any other job.

His work at DHS/HHSC was a very important calling to him. It was while working at DHS John and Linda met, fell in love, and married on June 29, 2002. Although both had previous marriages, this was the happiest and most rewarding relationship either of them had ever had and both looked very forward to Aug. 31, 2009 which was supposed to be his day of retirement and celebration.

According to Doug Park, John's supervisor and friend at HHSC "John was a cherished State of Texas employee who was the epitome of the kind of public servant that every tax payer hopes for and every colleague respects and appreciates. He never lost sight of the constituency he was dedicated to serve. He never stopped caring for the citizens of the State of Texas, especially those less fortunate. John knew he was blessed and knew that others needed his service to get by. He worked tirelessly to do his part to ensure that benefits were delivered on time, every time. For him, that meant arriving before his appointed time and staying after his day should have been completed, virtually every day. The State of Texas lost a champion on Dec. 23, 2009. We will miss him."

Being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and farming was the joy of his life. With his cows, donkeys, and other farming activities, his days were spent to the fullest; John really enjoyed life and all it had to offer. John was confident that his beloved son-in-law Ruben will be very capable and willing to complete John's dream on the farms. Ruben is truly the son John never had.

John was preceded in death by his parents. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife Linda, daughter Lisa Ann Lopez and son-in-law Ruben Lopez, two grandchildren Amanda Marie Brock and Sterling Brock Lopez, two great-grandchildren Riley Patrick Brock and Priscilla Joyce Brock. John is also big brother to Davey and Bill (wife Penny) Brock who live in Arizona who will always cherish and be grateful for the time they spent with John this past year. Also left with many cherished memories are his mother-in-law Opal Powell, his brother-in-law Buddy Powell, his nephew Charlie Powell, and great-niece Raymie Ross. He is also survived by many precious cousins and a vast number of friends from all walks of life; many of whom took the walk through his illness with John and Linda.

The family would like to express sincere love and gratitude to our friend Harvey Carter in charge of valet parking at Seton Hospital. What a joy and help he was on every visit to Seton Main. Also, to all the staff at Seton Main on 7th floor north, the staff at the Bastrop Lakeside Hospital Lab & Registration, the staff at the Bastrop Cancer Treatment Center, the staff at Bastrop Physical Therapy and Fitness Center, and Hospice Austin's Christopher House. A very special expression of gratitude to his doctors who helped John over the years and through these last 6 months; Dr. David Garza, Dr. Robert Dougherty, Dr. Matthew Hummell, Dr. Michael Kasper, Dr. Jeffery Chen, and Dr. Rick Taylor.

A memorial service will be held at the new Bastrop Providence Funeral Home, Hwy. 71 East on January 22, 2010 at 3:00 p.m.

A tribute to John has been placed on the Texas Health and Human Services Commission web site at HYPERLINK "http://www.hhsc.state.tx.us/newsletter/" http://www.hhsc.state.tx.us/newsletter/ for his service to and for the people of the State of Texas.
