Margaret Galbraith was serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service and billetted at Whitfield House on North Way at Great Yarmouth.

On the Eleventh of May, 1943, while the ATS women were out on the Wellesley Road Recreation Ground behind the building, eighteen Focke-Wulf 190 fighters carrying bombs struck the area. Per instructions, the women ran to take cover in the hostel, twenty six making it and one tripping and falling.

One bomb hit Whitfield House; the women who had made it to 'shelter' died as a result.

In 1994 a memorial plaque recording the tragedy and and listing the names of those who lost their lives was unveiled at the hotel site(now the Burlington Palms) by Lady Soames, youngest daughter of wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Corporal Galbraith was the daughter of James and Margaret Galbraith, of New Mills, Derbyshire. She is interred in the Great Yarmouth(Caister) Cemetery.
