Notice in Memphis Reveille dated April 1, 1897:
Henderson G. Poe, of Milton, Iowa, died Tuesday of last week and was buried Thursday following. Mr. Poe lived in this county for many years and the intelligence of his death brings sadness to the hearts of many of our citizens. During his residence in this county he was elected county judge and served his constituents faithfully and well. Of late years he lived a retired life, but took an active interest in current events. We join the many friends here in tendering the bereaved family sincere sympathy in their bereavement.

Obituary Milton Herald, Milton, Iowa dated March 31, 1897:

Henderson G. Poe was born in eastern Virginia July 10, 1824 and died at his home near Milton, March 23, 1897, aged 72 years, 8 months and thirteen days.

Mr. Poe came to Iowa about 1851 and located in Van Buren County near Vernon where he resided until 1860 when he removed to Scotland County, Missouri. Here he prospered in business and was for two years judge of the county court. In 1886 he came back to Iowa and has since that time lived near this place.

His wife and one child have preceded him across the river while seven children are left to mourn the loss of an indulgent and loving father. He will be missed in the home, the church and in the community. Before leaving Virginia, Mr. Poe professed faith in Jesus Christ and united with the M. E. Church and at the time of his demise he was a faithful and consistent member of the same.

He died leaving behind the unmistakable evidence of the triumph of his faith over death and the grave. The funeral services were conducted at his late residence by his pastor, J.Wesley Potter, and the remains were taken to Hitt, Missouri for interment. He rests from his labors and his works follow him.

A footnote: Through the columns of this Herald, we wish to publicly express our most heartfelt thanks to our friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted us by deed and actions in the sickness and death of our father. May you never be forgotten in the time of trouble. Children of H.G. Poe
