Elnathan was the son of Elihu and Emeline (Reed) Briggs. Elnathan's mother died when he was only two years old. He does not appear in either the 1870 or 1880 Census with his father and siblings. He was living with Philetus and Jerusha Smith in Bristol, in 1880 he was listed with the surname Smith and listed as "son." It appears he was adopted by the Smith's after his mother's death but except for 1880 retained the Briggs surname.
