Some resources show he was born in 1877 but this is not what he reported in 1918 (the error is caused by the 1900 census where he was shown born in August 1877). He registered for the World War I draft at Lebanon, Kentucky on September 12, 1918 and gave his name and date of birth as shown herein. He said he was a farmer, lived in Loretto and was married to Edna Mary Lizzie Mattingly. He described himself as being of medium height and built with blue eyes and brown hair.
