LOUIS LEISCHOW CRASH FATALITY

Wife Critically Hurt in Manitowoc County Accident

A Manitowoc County crash claimed th elives of two persons Friday, including Louis Leischow, 66 year-old Ahnapee farmer, who died at 12:37 in the afternoon, three and one-half hours after the accident. His death, caused by internal hemorrhages due to a crushed chest, occured at Holy Family hospital, Manitowoc.

Miss Elizabeth Rossberg, 67, Milwaukee, a passenger in the car driven by Mrs. Ethelwyn R. Beckwith, 77 Milwaukee, died instantly of cerebral hemorrhages due to a skull fracture. Miss Rossberg was a German teacher at Milwaukee Downer college.

Critically injured were Mr. Leischow's wife, Clara, 64, and Mrs. Beckwith. The Leischow's grandchildren, Germaine and Stephen Guadagnoli, 14 and 10 years of age respectively, suffered bumps and bruises but weren't seriously injured.

Mrs. Leischow's injuries included numerous deep lacerations and cuts of the face, a fractured left arm and numerous body bruises. Mrs. Beckwith suffered a fractured left hip, possible skull fractures and numerous bruises, contusions and abrasions of the body. More than 100 stiches were taken to Mrs. Leischow's face.

Mr. and Mrs. Leischow were taking their grandchildren, Germaine and Stephen, back to their home in Melrose Park Ill, after a vacation spent on the Leischow farm in Kodan in Ahnapee town. Mr. and Mrs. Guadagnoli are the children's parents.

The accident occurred shortly afer 9 a.m. on Highway 141 two and one-fouths miles south of Newton. Mr. Leischow told county police that oncoming Beckwith car veered across the road into the ditch on his side of the highway, then came back onto the pavement nad hit him nearly head-on.

The accident was not witnessed, but motorists who came upon the scene said Mrs. Beckwith was thrown to the pavement on the driver's side. Miss Rossberg was pitched against the dash boards.

Mr. Leischow caught the steering wheel in the chest. All injured were taken to Holy Family hospital.

For several hours Miss Rossberg's identity was not established.

Services for Mr. Leischow were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock in the Methodist church, Algoma. The Rev. Donald Francis officiated and burial was in the evergreen. Haucke funeral home handled the arrangements.

Mr. Leischow was born July 16, 1889, on the farm which remained his home until his death. The homestead farm, originally owned by his father, Fred Leischow, is located on the Door County border in Ahnapee town.

The Kodan school, three miles form his home, where Mr. Leischow received his education and he worked on the family farm until 1911 when he took it over. He married Clara Busch at Algoma on June 6, 1912.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Mario (Eva) Guadagnoli, Melrose Park, Ill., one son, Glenn, Algoma; two grandchildren; sister, Mrs. George (Anna) Smith, Wausaukee, and three brothers, Gerhart, Algoma, harry, Kewaunee, and Arthur, Milwaukee. One son died in infancy.

Funeal services for Miss Rossberg were held Wednesday. The body was at a Manitowoc funerla home. There was cremation at Sheboygan that morning and the remains were sent to Milwaukee.

Miss Rossberg joined the Milwaukee Downer faculty in 1912. At Downer she was chairman of the language and literature division and head of McLean hall where she lived. Her travels included 18 trips abroad. She had no immediate survivors.

Miss Rossberg and Mrs. Beckwith were en route to Door County for a week's vacation when the accident occurred. Mrs. Beckwith is a retired faculty member of Downer college.

Driver of one of the vehicles, she suffered skull and leg fractures and never regained consciousness. She is survived by two brothers, both of Cleveland, Ohio, and a sister in Chicago. memorial services were held at Milwaukee on Thursday afternoon.
