Mr. Leslie was always smiling, and he loved to share that smile with others. In his younger years he even worked as an editorial cartoonist for the News Herald, the Morganton newspaper.

Most people remember Mr. Leslie because of The Book Store, a store that he owned and operated for over thirty years. Being an artist himself, he always stocked art supplies and helped schoolchildren choose their first charcoal and drawing pencils as seriously as he helped the adults choose oils.

Mr. Leslie attended art school in New York and taught classes in art at Western Piedmont Community College and the Morganton Recreation Department.

He was a son of William Augustus Leslie, Sr. and Annie McKesson. He was married to Charlotte Bergeron.

Mr. Leslie was active in community affairs, including serving as president of the Morganton Merchants Association, Grace Hospital Board of Trustees, and the Morganton ABC board. He was also active in Grace Church, and served as board junior and senior warden.

In addition to his wife, he was survived by daughters Mrs. John G. Scott and Miss Miriam Leslie, and by a son, William Augustus Leslie III; by his sister Annie Leslie Phillips, and by brother Charles W.Leslie.
