Son of Addison and Serephina Melissa (Merrill) Archer.

On 2 Sep 1861 James M. Archer mustered into service with the 1st Company Massachusetts Sharpshooters. He was 18 years, 3 months and 7 days old.

On 8 Sep 1864 James ended military service with the 1st Massachusetts Sharpshooters by mustering out.

On 1 Apr 1867 James, 23, married Ursula Jane Tate, 18, daughter of Joshua and Maria Tate, at Lynn, MA. They had one son, Walter, before Ursula died. James never remarried.

James and his son lived with James' widowed mother in 1880, clarifying the relationships.

He was enumerated in the 1890 US Federal census, Veteran's Schedule in Jun 1890 at Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts, as having served in the 1st Co. Andrews Sharpshooters, with reference to the 15th Massachusetts Infantry. In June 1905, James received a pension for his service.

James died on 17 Dec 1909 at Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts. He was 66 years, 6 months and 21 days old.
