Edward Neel was born April 3, 1806, in Logan County, Kentucky, son of Charles O. Neel and Eleanor (Nellie) Atterbury.

On February 11, 1828, in Warren County, Kentucky, Edward married Mary Polly Harris, daughter of William Harris and Nancy Highsmith. Mary Polly Harris was born June 3, 1810, in Warren County, Kentucky. Mary and Edward had 11 known children: Nancy Ellen Neal, William Charles Neal, Mary Jane Neal, James Rice Neal, Thomas Graham Neal, Sarah Ann Neel, Susan E. Neal, Elizabeth F. Neal, Sophronia H. O'Neal, Lucinda R. Neel, and Martha Arsenia (Mattie) Neal. It is interesting to note that some of the children changed the spelling of their surname from Neel to Neal, except one who changed hers to O'Neal.

The family was living a few doors down from Edward's uncle, Benjamin Neel, and his family.

Six children were still living at home: Nancy, age 31, a seamstress; Susan, age 20, a seamstress; Elizabeth, age 18, a seamstress; Sophronia, age 16, a seamstress; Lucinda, age 13; and Martha, age 6.
