George W. Van Winkle, one of the oldest residents of Centerville and a pioneer of the early days, died early Sat. morning at the home of his son, George Van Winkle, Jr. Mr. Van Winkle was born in Kentucky, in Oct. 1824, and was therefore in his 79th year. When a young man he moved into Tennessee and from there came west, locating in Oregon. He came into the basin in 1863 among the first settlers of the country. He built one of the first log cabins erected in Idaho City. Mr. Van Winkle was a resident of Garden Valley for about 32 years but in recent years he has been living at the ranch near the sawmill which was operated by his sons. At one time Mr. Van Winkle was in possession of considerable property, but lost a great deal of it through fire and other misfortunes. He owned an interest in a woolen factory in Oregon, which was destroyed by fire. A saloon on Buena Vista Bar near Id. City which was twice burned. He owned a ranch in Garden Valley at the time of his death. In the prine of his life, Mr. Van Winkle was a man of immense strength and was a hard worker. He was of a cheerful disposition and kindly nature and had great fondness for his children. He leaves a widow and the following children: William, George, Issac, Lewis, Mrs. Annie Lewis, Miss Nettie and Miss Mary. Funeral services were held in Centerville Monday. Rev. Newman of Idaho City officiated. Interment was made at Garden Valley.
