KEYSER, W.Va. - Philip E. "Nopie" Kelly Sr., 84, of 250 Bobwhite Dr., Keyser, formerly of Danville, Md., died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 at WMHS-Braddock Campus, Cumberland.

Born Oct. 9, 1923 at Piedmont, W.Va., he was a son of the late William T. and May (Bell) Kelly. He also was preceded in death by his stepmother, Agnes (Bissett) Kelly; five brothers, Joseph, William, James, Charles "Hotsie" and John Kelly; and one sister, Helen Skidmore.

Mr. Kelly was retired with 37 years of service as a machinist with first the B & O Railroad and then later with the Chessie System. He also was formerly employed with Hercules Corporation for four years. He attended St. Peter's Catholic School in Westernport, Md. and was a 1942 graduate of Piedmont High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving as a medic during World War II and was a life member of Queen's Point Memorial Post 6775, VFW, McCoole, Md. He was a member of the Church of the Assumption, Keyser, Knights of Columbus, Council 10545, Keyser, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and the El Fidel Club.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Margaret V. (Grady) Kelly; one son, Philip E. Kelly Jr. and wife Dana of Ellicott City, Md.; one daughter, Ginny Newlin and husband Tim of Keyser; one sister, Margie McFarland of Ashburn, Va.; and three grandchildren, Meredythe Barrick and husband Brent of Keyser, Michael Kelly and fiancé Elyse Calvo of Boston, Mass. and Geoff Newlin of Keyser and Morgantown, W.Va.

Friends will be received at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home on Wednesday evening at 8:30 p.m.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Assumption on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Ivan M. Lebar, T.O.R. as celebrant.

Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone, Md. Military honors will be accorded.

The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund, Council 10545, 171 W. Piedmont St., Keyser, WV 26726.
