Muriel Arleen (Okerlund) Nicholls, 85, a homemaker who was active in her church, died of natural causes Wednesday at Peace Hospice.
Her memorial service was at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Cremation was under the direction of O'Connor Funeral Home.
Survivors include her husband, Arlo A. Nicholls (1920-2010) of Great Falls; four sons, a sister, nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, LeRoy and Serine Okerlund; and brothers Roland Okerlund and Spencer Okerlund.
Muriel was born April 20, 1922, in Great Falls, and graduated from Great Falls High School in 1940.
She married Arlo Nicholls on Oct. 6, 1940, in Great Falls.
Muriel was a finance clerk at C.M. Russell High School from 1968 to 1978. She was an extraordinary spirit, and was one of the most kind, generous, loving, caring and genuine people you could ever know. These attributes made her a very special person to her friends and family. She was the matriarch of the Nicholls-Nairns-Okerlund clan - the glue that held everyone together.
She wore many hats! She was "Muriel" to her friends; "Murky" to her high school classmates; "Sarge" to her family; "Ding" during Seeley Lake reunions, "Auntie Moe" to her nieces and nephews, "Mom" to her three sons; "Grandma" to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and loving wife to her husband, Arlo, for 67 wonderful years.
She had been a member of the PTA and a Scout den mother, participated in the Paris Gibson Square Christmas collection, and was a devoted member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where she belonged to the Altar Guild, Circle, taught Sunday school and was involved in many other church activities.
Muriel enjoyed pinochle, knitting, quilting, camping and family get-togethers. Each summer, her extended family would gather at Seeley Lake for a reunion, a tradition everyone looked forward to for more than 40 years.
She never faltered in ending a visit with a wave from her doorstep; now it is time for us to say goodbye to her. We will miss her dearly, but the memories we share of her will help ease our loss and bring us comfort.
A blessing goes out to Peace Hospice staff, who made her final days peaceful and comfortable. Her family will always be indebted to them. Additionally, a special thanks to the staff and friends at Cambridge Place.
