Samuel Thomas Rister enlisted in the Civil War-Milam Guards June 16, 1861 as a PVT serving under Capt W. A. Sewell, 27th Brigade and General E. S. C. Robertson, Commanding, Tx. On April 30, 1862 he began military service for the Confederate States of America, mustered May 3 at Camp Terry (age 26). He was in Co. C. TV1 under Capt Thomas H. Gatlin, 26th Brigade Col. R. T. P. Allen, Commander C. S. A. family tradition said he was promoted to Captain.
It appears that Samuel T. and his brother William Charles visited a cousin Martha Dovy Bass while in the Army in Arkansas, the drawing "The Breaking Up of Camp Nelson" with patriotic words for the folk song "Root Hog or Die" was signed by S. T. Rister," Presented to Miss M. D. Bass by W. C. Rister Army of Texas Near Pine Bluff, April 12, 1863"
