Joy grew up in Evansville, IN where she graduated from Central High School and attended Lockyear Business College.

Joy retired from Commonwealth Life Insurance Company. She was a member of the Robert Morris Chapter #87 Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as Worthy Matron in 1985 alongside her husband, William, as Worthy Patron. She also was a member of the Daughters of the Nile, White Shrine of Jerusalem, and Order of the Amaranth, and Hadi Shrine's Honored Ladies.

She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. Even after losing her eyesight in 1993, Joy still enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas and Tunica for gambling.

She and her friends from "Club:" Genie Essick, Jean Ferguson, Etna Keller, Peggy Davidson, Vera Hodge, Jackie Feaster, and Winnie Klass have met monthly for over 60 years to play cards and socialize.

Joy was preceded in death by her parents, Maurice and Onie Belle White and by her husband, William A. Sloat, on May 25, 1989.

She is survived by her children, Mark (Beverly) Sloat, Karen Sloat, Michael Sloat, Timothy (Donna) Sloat, Judy Valceanu, and Janice (Gerald) Wade, all of Evansville; her grandchildren, Jamie and Nicholas Valceanu, Shannon, Emily, and William Sloat, and Jessica and Jennifer Wade; her sister, Joan (Darol) Watson; her brother, Warren (Patricia) White; sister-in-law, MaryLou (Harold) Whitney; brothers-in-law, Earl (Florence) Sloat and Jack (Barbara) Sloat, all of Evansville, and John and Jim Sloat of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
