He was the seventh son and 12th child of Doctor Benjamin Rush and Julia Rush. He married Ann Wilmer on August 12, 1828. They had three children:

1). James Rush (May 8, 1829-December 30, 1831)

2). Julia Williams Rush (November 28, 1832-August 8, 1898). She married Alexander Biddle on October 11, 1855. He would go on to served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 121st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.

3). William Rush (February 7, 1837-April 12, 1860)

He was originally buried in Christ Church Burial Ground in Philadelphia, but was moved to the vault of his brother-in-law, Henry J. Williams, in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
