FATHER-IN-LAW OF GOV. AIKEN DIES

Herbert Howard, Retired Dairyman, Succumbs to Pneumonia
(Special to The Reformer.)

PUTNEY – Herbert Charles Howard, 74, father-in-law of Gov. George D. Aiken, died yesterday afternoon at his home after a long illness which terminated in pneumonia.

Funeral services will be held at Rohde's funeral home, Brattleboro, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Milton S. Czatt, pastor of Centre Congregational church, Brattleboro, will officiate. Burial will take place in Mt. Pleasant cemetery, here.

He was born in Guilford on Oct. 2, 1866, a son of Charles Curtis and Mary (Brown) Howard. His early life was spent in Brattleboro and went to Dummerston in 1903. He engaged in dairy farming, retiring a few years ago and moving here.

On April 7, 1894, married Nellie Sarah Kathan, who survives. The couple had three children, Beatrice, wife of Governor Aiken; Russell, also of Putney, and Maxine, wife of Francis Fleming of Rutland. Mr. Howard also leaves four grandchildren, Dorothy (Aiken) Morse, Marjorie Aiken Cleverly, and Howard and Barbara Aiken; two adopted grandchildren Marilyn and Graham Howard, and two great-grandsons, Elliott and Sherwood Morse.
