World War II United States Navy Officer. Born in Osawatomie, Kansas, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1922 and was commissioned a communication officer. At the start of World War II, he was a Lieutenant Commander in charge of the Navy’s cryptanalytic unit stationed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In early 1942, he played a major role in the decoding of the Japanese main fleet orders during the weeks before the Battle of Midway. Through his efforts, the United States was able to defeat the Japanese Navy and turn the course of the war in the Pacific. During the Korean War, he served as chief director of the Naval Security Communications Group. He retired from the Navy as a Captain in 1955 and is a member of the Military Hall of Honor.
