Theodore J. Ackerman was born 1821 in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, NC the 2nd of 8 known children (4 boys/4 girls) born to prominent businessman and financier, Jonathan Coombs Ackerman and his wife, Maria Smith.
He was the paternal grandchild of Geleyn Ackerman & Jane Coombs of New Brunswick; and gr-grandchild of Abraham Ackerman and Janet Romeyn who had removed from Hackensack, Bergen County, NJ to settle in New Brunswick. He was a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Abraham "David" Davidtse Ackerman, who came to New Netherlands from Holland and married Aeltie Adrianse Van Laer, later becoming one of the early Dutch settlers of Hackensack NJ.
Theodore was left financially well-off when his father passed, having received stock in the India Rubber Company, and it is believed he was also connected with some of the business ventures of his brother, Warren.
Theodore married in January 1858 to Ellen D. Lockwood (1823-1911) of New York, and together they would become parents to 4 known children:
* Caroline E. Ackerman (1853-1931), who became (2nd) wife of Dr. C. Purdy Lindsley of New Haven, CT.
* Frances "Fanny" Ackerman (1855-1855)
* George Clarence Ackerman (1856-1880)
* C. Frederick Ackerman (1857-1859)
The couple resided in New Brunswick following their marriage, where Theodore ran an apothecary. By 1870 they had settled in Westfield, Union County, NJ where he declared himself a "farmer"; which seems incongruous with his known financial portfolio. Sometime before 1880, the couple removed to New Haven, CT, most likely around the time their son George was attending Yale. It was here they both remained until their deaths.
Theodore died in New Haven on January 8, 1911, at age 90. His bride of some 61 years passed less than 9 months later on August 23, 1911 at about age 79 and, for unknown reasons was not buried with her husband, but was interred in New Haven.
His only surviving child, Caroline, married late in life, becoming the 2nd wife of Dr. Charles Purdy Lindsley. She later became embroiled in the unraveling of will of Warren Ackerman, who had left most of his estate to her father, Theodore. Her mother died intestate August 23, 1911, and Caroline, then about age 57, was appointed administratrix of her estate.
Caroline and Dr. Lindsley left $150,000 to St. Thomas's Episcopal Church in New Haven, Ct. which allowed for the building of a new church and adjacent parish hall. Within the nave are stained glass windows depicting scenes from the life of Christ. Above the gallery at the rear of the church is a rose window given in memory of Caroline Ackerman Lindsley by her husband, Dr. Lindsley.
