He was the paternal grandchild of Geleyn Ackerman & Jane Coombs of New Brunswick; and gr-grandchild of Abraham Ackerman and Janet Romeyn who had removed from Hackensack, Bergen County, NJ to settle in New Brunswick. He was a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Abraham "David" Davidtse Ackerman, who came to New Netherlands from Holland and married Aeltie Adrianse Van Laer, later becoming one of the early Dutch settlers of Hackensack NJ.
George began his career as an apothecary in New Brunswick, later turning his hand to the business interests he inherited from his father, and later becoming an importer of fine woolens from Europe.
On June 2, 1864, the 39-year old married 30-year old heiress, Lydia Platt, youngest daughter of wealthy New York merchant and banker, Isaac L. Platt & Marion Erskine Ruthven in a ceremony performed in NYC by the Rev. Wm. Adams, D.D. Soon thereafter, the couple removed to Plainfield, Union Co, NJ where Lydia's father had retired.
The marriage lasted a scant 10 years, and was childless, as George died in 1874 at age 49. His widow would later marry his younger brother, millionaire Warren Ackerman, and this marriage was childless as well.
Lydia Platt Ackerman survived both her husbands, passing in 1907 at about age 73. Her final resting place is not known by this researcher.
