Mrs. Gates, need Josephine Monka, familiarly known among her eastside friends as "Grandma Gates" was born in the town of Newton, January 22, 1868. When she was but a child, the family moved to the town of Two Rivers.
She was married here to Peter Gates 60 years ago and he preceded her in death 8 years ago. The couple celebrated their gold wedding anniversay in 1936.
Leaves 10 children
Surviving Mrs. Gates are four daughters, Mrs. Mary Wiltgen of this city, Mrs. Samuel Nelson of Spring Hill, Manitowoc, Mrs. Carloss Hollenbeck, Mrs. Clarence McCue, sons, Joseph, Van, Louis & Peter, all of this city, & George Gates of Milwaukee. She also leaves 3 brothers, Frank of the eastside, Joseph of Manitowoc, and Alex Monka of Michigan. There are also 25 grandchildren & 29 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Gates was a member of the Rosary society of Sacred Heart church for many years.
