In 1894, he was ordained but taught for several years before taking up the ministry as a Missionary of the Juniata Conference of the Central Pennsylvania Lutheran Synod. His duties were in Perry County, serving the newly formed Bucks Valley Charge, consisting of Centre, St. Samuels and Buffalo.
In 1901 he was called to the Ringgold Charge, Jefferson County where he served until 1918. At that time he was called by the nearby Smicksburg Charge.
In 1921, Rev. Axe began his service at Knox, Clarion County and served until 1930. In 1930 he accepted a call to Coudersport.
Likely towards the end of 1933, being of ill health, he resigned the Charge and removed to the residence of his sister, Margaret Axe in Kittanning.
He never married.
